For cannabis flowers, pharmaceutical grade (in German: Apothekenqualität, pharmacy quality) is not an advertising term. It means production and testing according to pharmaceutical rules: the THC and CBD content is known, the flowers are tested for contamination, and every pack is clearly labelled and assigned to a batch.

In Germany, medical cannabis flowers are dispensed only on prescription and only by a pharmacy (Apotheke). The pharmacy is a licensed, pharmacist-run business that checks the medicine before handing it over.

What does pharmaceutical grade include?

Medical flowers come from controlled cultivation and are processed according to the rules of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Tests cover identity, active ingredient content, moisture, microbial contamination such as mould, and residues of pesticides and heavy metals, among other things.

Before dispensing, the pharmacy checks identity and labelling. The label shows the strain, THC and CBD content, quantity, batch and expiry date.

Pharmaceutical grade means controlled identity, purity and labelling. Full stop.

Why does quality matter for treatment?

Medical treatment needs reliable values. If the active ingredient content varies or is unknown, the amount cannot be set sensibly and side effects become hard to assess. Contamination is a risk, especially for people with a weakened immune system.

Uncontrolled products from the black market offer none of these checks: you know neither what they contain nor how much active ingredient. Which pharmacy you use in Germany is your choice, see Free choice of pharmacy.

Quality does not end at the pharmacy

Quality can also suffer at home: light, heat and moisture change the active ingredients and encourage mould. Store flowers protected from all three and do not keep them loose in the vaporizer. How a vaporizer is used and cleaned is explained in Vaporizing cannabis instead of smoking.

Frequently asked questions

How can I recognise pharmaceutical-grade cannabis?

By the fact that it is dispensed by a pharmacy on prescription, and by the label showing strain, active ingredient content, batch and expiry date.

Does the THC content vary between batches?

Slightly, within set limits. The actual content of the batch is shown on the label.

Are expensive strains better?

Not necessarily. The price says little about whether a strain is suitable for your treatment.

Can I buy pharmaceutical-grade cannabis without a prescription?

No. In Germany, medical cannabis flowers are dispensed by pharmacies only on a doctor's prescription.
